Landscape Architecture George and Drew are continuing their work as landscape architects, often working with Moriyama & Teshima Architects on large-scale high-profile projects. In their public garden for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Centre in Peterborough, assemblies of rock, gravels, and native wetland plants around a large pond are reminiscent of shorelines of the Great Lakes. Indigenous plants reduce the need for extensive irrigation. The garden received a Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Honour Award. Water, indigenous plants, and rocks also provide the landscaping palette for the award-winning Toronto headquarters of the Global Group, manufacturers of contract office furniture. Green roofs are becoming another specialty. The green roof for the new Canadian War Museum in Ottawa is the logical choice for a building designed to the theme of regeneration as a symbol of hope and endurance. But it's also an effective and economical solution to storm water management and will provide significant energy savings, air pollution remediation, and heat island reduction when the building opens in 2005. With sustainable development and design becoming increasingly critical around the world, Moriyama & Teshima Planners is poised to take on new challenges and to continue the evolutionary process of learning, problem-solving, and striving to make the world greener, healthier, and more livable. |
